Read Every Night!!!

What can you do at home?
Choose a time to read aloud to your children at least once a day.
Show your children that reading is fun-let them see you read.
Keep books handy to fill the time when you travel, shop, or have a doctor's appointment.
It is never too late to read aloud to your child - even high school students benefit from reading every day.

Different Ways to Read With Your Child
Reading Aloud-This is whenyou reread the book or poem to your child, touching the words as you read.

Echo Reading-This is when you read a phrase or sentence and then have your child echo the same words after you.

Filling In The Gap-This is when your reread, but drop your voice and pause for your child to fill in the missing word.  This can be done with any predictable or repetitive words in the story/poem, rhyming words, words that closely match the pictures, easy sight words, etc.

Why Read Aloud?

Children learn about reading!
Reading can be enjoyable.
They become familiar with reading process.
They see written words on page matched to reader's spoken words.
They learn about reading conventions.

Children learn about books!
They discover new worlds, new friends, new knowledge and familiar comforting themes.
It exposes them to books they might not choose on their own.
They learn different genres.
They begin to develop an understanding about the shape and design of stories.
They learn important cognitive concepts that are part of the story structure.

Children learn about language!
They learn the language of books is different than conversational language.
Listening to books exposes children to a range of new vocabulary.
Reading aloud exposes children to good grammar.

Children learn about the world!
Children acquire knowledge about a variety of topics when they are read to:  people, families, homes, jobs, cultures and belief systems.
Children also are introduced to information on how things work:  natural and physical sciences, art and architure, sea and space, life in different times (history) and places (geography).
Reading aloud stimulates children's imagination.

Other Activities to Try With Stories or Poems

Act out the story or poem if possible using simple movements
Talk about the ideas in the story/poem or about unusual meanings of words
Go on a letter hunt, having your child point to certain letters
Go on a word hunt, having your child point to certain small or repeated words.
Say a word from the story and have your child think of other words that begin with the same letter or sound
Have your child listen for the rhyming words as you read.  Then see if they can think of other words that rhyme with a

word from the story/poem.
Point out words that go with pictures in the book.
